Super Junior member Choi Siwon has once again used the Korean national flag, the Taegeukgi, to make a public stand. After Incheon City put up a banner ahead of the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation with the Taegeukgi printed upside down, he made clear that acknowledging the error mattered more than explaining it away. While his own bandmate Kim Hee-chul eventually apologized and backed off, Choi held his ground. The reason a single social media comment from an idol group member drew this much attention becomes clear once his recent pattern of behavior is examined: this flag episode was not an impulsive reaction but an extension of a consistent stance.
Ahead of Liberation Day, Incheon City put up a street banner depicting an independence activist holding the Taegeukgi. But it soon emerged that the flag’s trigram pattern was printed upside down — the original design calls for red on top and blue on the bottom, and the Incheon banner had the colors reversed. Kim Hee-chul reacted first, posting an angry message along with flag emoji on social media to flag the problem, and Choi Siwon quickly echoed him with flag emoji of his own. Incheon removed the banner just two days after installing it, on August 8. But the story took a twist afterward: Kim Hee-chul said he had misjudged the image, mistaking the way the activist was holding the flag for the flag’s actual orientation, and apologized for reacting too hastily. The two bandmates’ differing responses pushed the controversy into a new phase.
Even after Kim Hee-chul’s apology, Choi Siwon did not back down. On his Threads account, he wrote that acknowledging and correcting a mistake is a more responsible attitude than offering an explanation, continuing his criticism of the city government. He backed the claim with evidence rather than leaving it at an emotional remark, posting comparison images showing that last year the Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification and the city of Seongnam had used the same base image but corrected the flag’s orientation before publishing it, while Incheon had used the unaltered original. By pointing to a specific factual discrepancy rather than simply venting, his comments carried more weight than an ordinary celebrity’s political remark, observers noted.
The remark drew outsized attention largely because of Choi Siwon’s pattern of behavior in recent months. In July, he left three Taegeukgi emoji on a video of what has come to be known as the Olympic Park rally, offering his support without further comment. The rally was organized around demands for a revote and a hand recount of same-day ballots tied to a shortage of ballot papers reported during the June 3 local elections, an episode that fueled calls for the allegations surrounding election administration to be fully verified. Earlier that same month, he posted, then deleted, a photo combining the Taegeukgi with a night view of Lotte World Tower in Seoul’s Jamsil district, again drawing speculation about his intent. In February, he posted a four-character phrase on X translating roughly to “injustice will not stand, what is built on it will crumble,” after former President Yoon Suk-yeol received a life sentence in the first-trial ruling on insurrection-leader charges. Last September, he also posted a tribute after American conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed. Amid this pattern, his political remarks have put him at odds with some of his own fandom, and in May he filed a defamation and civil damages lawsuit against ten anonymous users he identified as authors of malicious posts.
That a single social media post from a celebrity can generate this much reaction shows how much the Taegeukgi and the idea of patriotism it represents still move the public. Choi Siwon again chose principle over the silence that usually protects a celebrity’s popularity. His brief line, that admitting fault matters more than explaining it away, applies just as well far beyond Incheon City, to any institution more focused on covering up mistakes than correcting them. 이번 발언이 유독 주목받는 이유는 최근 몇 달간 이어진 최시원의 행보 때문이다. 그는 지난 7월 이른바 올림픽공원 집회 영상에 태극기 이모지 세 개를 남기며 별다른 설명 없이 지지 의사를 밝혔다. 해당 집회는 6·3 지방선거 당시 불거진 투표용지 부족 사태와 관련해 재선거와 당일투표 수개표를 요구하는 자리로, 선거 관리를 둘러싼 의혹이 충분히 검증돼야 한다는 목소리가 함께 쏟아졌던 사안이다. 앞서 이달 초에는 태극기와 서울 잠실 롯데월드타워 야경이 담긴 사진을 올렸다가 삭제해 다시 한번 해석이 분분했다. 지난 2월에는 윤석열 전 대통령이 내란 우두머리 혐의 1심에서 무기징역을 선고받자 자신의 엑스 계정에 불의필망 토붕와해라는 문구를 올려 화제를 모으기도 했다. 지난해 9월에는 미국 보수 활동가 찰리 커크가 피격으로 숨졌을 때도 추모의 뜻을 밝힌 바 있다. 이런 흐름 속에서 최시원의 정치적 목소리를 둘러싸고 일부 팬덤과 갈등을 빚기도 했고, 그는 지난 5월 악의적인 게시물을 작성한 것으로 지목한 익명 이용자 열 명을 상대로 손해배상 소송을 제기하며 정면 대응을 택했다.
