A new CNN poll shows President Trump has overtaken both Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln as the Republican president that Republicans admire most. According to the survey conducted by SSRS between May 7 and 31, 53 percent of Republicans named Trump as the Republican president they admire most, compared with 18 percent who chose Reagan and 8 percent who chose Lincoln. Trump’s share is nearly three times Reagan’s and more than six times Lincoln’s, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.2 percentage points.
What stands out is not simply that Trump ranked first, but the scale of the gap over Reagan and Lincoln, two presidents long treated as touchstones within the Republican Party. Reagan is remembered for Cold War-era tax cuts and a hardline stance against the Soviet Union, and Lincoln for preserving the Union and abolishing slavery. That rank-and-file Republicans now place Trump so far ahead of both signals that his second term has fundamentally reordered the party’s core value system and sense of identity around Trump himself.
Especially notable is that this CNN survey comes from a network that has often kept the administration at arm’s length in its coverage, not from an openly pro-Trump outlet. Even CNN’s own data analysts described the results as showing Trump’s grip on the party has tightened, calling it a wake-up-call level of result. It suggests Trump’s political standing is not confined within his second-term base, but is expanding into a broader identity anchor for Republican voters overall.
This trend carries implications reaching beyond U.S. domestic politics. A Republican Party this solidly unified behind Trump makes it that much harder for opposing political forces worldwide, and for governments hoping the American political landscape might shift, to bet on Trump-era policy lines fading away anytime soon. For South Korea’s Lee Jae-myung government, in particular, this is a signal that ought to prompt a fresh, sober look at Korea-U.S. relations: the American conservative electorate’s support for Trump is not a passing phenomenon but a durable structural shift, and Korea needs strategy built for the long run, not policy premised on hoping it changes soon.

CNN조차 인정한 트럼프 대통령의 위상

한미관계도 이 흐름을 읽고 움직여야
이 흐름은 미국 국내정치에 그치지 않는 함의를 갖는다. 트럼프 대통령을 중심으로 이렇게 견고하게 결집한 공화당을 보면서, 전 세계 반대 정치세력이나 미국 정치지형 변화를 기대해온 정부들이 트럼프 시대의 정책 노선이 조만간 흐지부지될 것이라는 기대에 베팅하기는 그만큼 어려워졌다. 특히 이재명 정권 입장에서는 한미관계를 다시 냉정하게 점검해야 한다는 신호로 받아들여야 한다. 미국 보수 유권자층의 트럼프 지지는 일시적 현상이 아니라 지속되는 구조적 변화이며, 한국은 조만간 바뀌기를 기대하는 정책이 아니라 장기전에 맞는 전략을 세워야 한다.
