South Korea’s defense industry has cleared the threshold of the world’s largest arms market. News broke on the 19th that Hanwha Aerospace has been selected as the prototype manufacturer for the US Army’s next-generation self-propelled howitzer program. The starting point is a contract, signed between subsidiary Hanwha Defense USA and the US Army, to supply six K9MH wheeled self-propelled howitzer prototypes. This is no ordinary export achievement. Hanwha beat out top-tier defense powerhouses from the United States, Italy, Germany, and Britain to win the competition, and it marks the first time a South Korean-made weapons system has entered the regular force structure of the US military. With projections that the deal could grow into a production contract worth roughly 10 trillion won for up to 500 units, observers say the real stage for Korea’s defense industry, known as K-defense, has only just begun.
The US Army’s program, formally called the Mobile Tactical Cannon program, is aimed at replacing the aging M777 155mm towed howitzer with a more mobile, survivable platform. The push gained urgency from the Russia-Ukraine war, where towed artillery has proven dangerously vulnerable to drone strikes, driving demand for wheeled self-propelled systems that can shoot and relocate quickly. The US Army wrote the program into its budget request as early as March 2024 and opened it to competition among the world’s leading defense contractors. Hanwha Aerospace won out over rivals from the US, Italy, Germany, and Britain, with the US Army weighing delivery schedules, required performance, and localization costs before selecting Hanwha as the prototype supplier. The initial contract is valued at up to 262.9 million dollars, roughly 368.2 billion won, covering six prototype units with an option for twelve more. Over the next four years, the US Army will fine-tune the K9MH’s specifications to match its operational concepts and evaluate its performance, after which a final production contract is expected if no major defects surface. Industry estimates put the eventual production run at around 500 units, a contract that could reach roughly 10 trillion won — a scale that would make this far more than a symbolic first entry into the US market.
Beyond the numbers, this deal carries historical weight. A Hanwha Aerospace official put it plainly: seventy-six years after the United States supported South Korea’s artillery forces during the Korean War, South Korea is now supporting the rebuilding of America’s own artillery forces and defense industrial base. What was once a one-way flow of military aid from Washington to Seoul has become a two-way partnership in which Korean technology strengthens American firepower. This is the same lineage that runs back to President Park Chung-hee’s drive for self-reliant national defense — the conviction that a nation’s security cannot depend forever on someone else’s guns, and that building an indigenous defense industry from scratch was the only path to real sovereignty. The K9 self-propelled howitzer, born out of that decades-long push for self-reliant defense, has now grown strong enough to reinforce the artillery of the very ally that once armed South Korea. It is also a marker of Korea’s rising standing within the free world’s security architecture — proof that Korea has evolved from an aid recipient into a supplier trusted enough to be woven into the US military’s own force structure, at a moment when Washington is reorganizing its alliances across the Indo-Pacific to counter Chinese and Russian pressure.
Even so, credit for this achievement belongs to the defense industry’s engineers and the military’s procurement experts who spent years refining the K9 platform, not to the Lee Jae-myung administration. Hanwha Aerospace’s global reputation for the K9 was built up over some two decades, through exports to Poland, Australia, Egypt, and elsewhere, entirely independent of who happened to hold power in Seoul at any given moment. What the government must now do is stay out of the way and provide steady, consistent policy backing, rather than complicating the picture with the kind of strategic ambiguity toward China that has repeatedly drawn US scrutiny — as seen in the controversy over the National Pension Service’s investment in a Chinese military-linked company. If Seoul keeps sending mixed signals about its alignment even as its defense industry deepens integration with the US military supply chain, it risks undermining the very trust that made this contract possible. A defense export success achieved despite policy uncertainty, not because of it, is not something any administration should be allowed to claim as its own achievement.
The K9MH prototype contract is a landmark moment demonstrating both the competitiveness of Korea’s defense industry and the strength of the US-Korea alliance. Whether this becomes a springboard to an eventual 10-trillion-won production contract, and whether Korea’s defense industry keeps climbing in the US market, depends on how faithfully the current phase of specification refinement and performance evaluation proceeds over the next four years. The government’s role should be to consistently support the industry with clear, unwavering pro-alliance, anti-China policy, not to take credit that belongs to the engineers and soldiers who built this success from the ground up.
