“Go Get Some Consulting” — How a Seoul Mayoral Candidate Told a Struggling Vendor to Figure It Out Himself
There is a moment in every election when a candidate reveals, without calculation or spin, exactly who they are. For Jeong Won-o, the Democratic Party’s candidate for Seoul mayor, that moment came at a traditional market, in front of a merchant who had spent twenty-five years building a wholesale business — and had spent the last several years watching it bleed out.
The merchant had survived COVID. He had burned through his savings. He was running on debt. When Jeong Won-o walked through his stall and the man tried to explain how hard things had become, the candidate’s response was this: “You have so much here — why isn’t business doing better? Try switching to things tourists would like. Have you considered getting consulting from a professional?”
The merchant told reporters he had initially cheered for Jeong. By the end of the exchange, he said he felt a deep sense of shame — not about his own situation, but about having done so.
A Seoul mayoral candidate made a small business owner feel ashamed for asking for help. That is the sentence that should follow Jeong Won-o through every remaining day of this campaign.
What the Numbers Actually Say
The remark would have been politically damaging in any economic environment. In this one, it is disqualifying.
Metropolitan Seoul’s self-employed and small business sector is carrying debt loads roughly double those of non-metropolitan regions. The small business price outlook index recently hit its highest point in forty-one months. Loan delinquency rates among self-employed Koreans are running at approximately three times the levels recorded at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic — a period that itself nearly destroyed an entire generation of small operators.
The structural picture behind those numbers is not complicated, but it requires a candidate to actually understand it. Rent is up. Labor costs are up. Raw materials costs are up. Import prices are being pushed higher by a Korean won that has failed to stabilize against the dollar — a direct consequence of ongoing turbulence in the Korea-U.S. economic and security relationship. Oil prices are volatile on Strait of Hormuz risk, adding pressure to every business in the city that moves goods, heats a kitchen, or runs delivery vehicles. And South Korea has not secured a currency swap agreement with Washington — a standard financial safety net that the Lee Jae-myung administration’s foreign policy posture has made politically impossible to obtain.
The question Seoul’s small business owners are asking every morning is not which consulting firm to call. It is whether the Middle East conflict will end before their next loan payment comes due.
Against that reality, the Seoul mayoral candidate’s answer was: have you thought about pivoting to tourist merchandise?
The Structural Failure Behind the Gaffe
What makes Jeong Won-o’s market visit a political catastrophe rather than merely an embarrassing moment is that it exposes a complete absence of policy literacy on the issue that matters most to Seoul’s working economy.
A candidate who understood the situation would have walked into that market with something to say. Not platitudes — specifics. A commitment to building city-level support infrastructure for distressed small businesses. A plan to expand foot traffic through coordinated municipal marketing. A clear position on how Seoul’s city government would advocate at the national level for the Korea-U.S. financial agreements — the currency swap, the energy procurement arrangements, the trade framework — that are the upstream cause of the cost crisis hitting every vendor in every traditional market in the city.
Instead, Jeong offered a rebuke dressed up as advice. He told a man drowning in structural debt that the problem might be his product mix.
This is not a communication failure. It is a comprehension failure. And it matters because Seoul’s mayor has genuine levers to pull in a crisis like this — municipal loan guarantee programs, rent stabilization advocacy, direct small business support funds, and a platform to pressure the national government on the foreign policy decisions that are filtering down into import costs and exchange rates. A candidate who does not understand why business is bad cannot be trusted to use any of those levers correctly.
The Broader Pattern: What Jeong Won-o Represents
The consulting remark does not stand alone. Jeong Won-o has been signaling throughout this campaign a governing agenda that prioritizes progressive cultural programming — including gender-ideology initiatives that critics say would exceed even what former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon pursued before his death in 2020. In a city whose residents are watching their savings erode and their debt loads climb, the prospect of a mayor whose policy imagination runs to ideological experimentation rather than economic stabilization is not a theoretical concern. It is a governing philosophy on display.
Seoul has ten million residents. Its traditional markets, small restaurants, independent retailers, and service businesses are not abstract policy categories. They are the daily economic reality of the majority of the city’s working population. A candidate who responds to their distress with a suggestion to call a consultant has answered the only question that matters: he does not see their problem as his problem.
The Foreign Policy Connection Seoul Voters Need to Understand
The cost crisis crushing Seoul’s self-employed sector does not originate in Seoul. It originates in the foreign policy choices of the Lee Jae-myung administration in the Blue House — and it is being transmitted to market stalls and restaurant kitchens through exchange rates, fuel prices, and import costs.
South Korea has not renewed its currency swap agreement with the United States. It has not secured preferential access to lower-cost American energy supplies that would reduce exposure to Middle East price volatility. It has been unable to convene a substantive Korea-U.S. summit on the economic and security architecture that would stabilize the bilateral relationship. These are not accidents. They are the predictable output of a foreign policy framework that has prioritized accommodation of China over alignment with Washington.
The precedent is visible in real time. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently took a posture toward the Trump administration that Washington read as antagonistic. The response was swift and simultaneous: a reduction in U.S. military presence in Germany and a 25 percent automotive tariff. South Korea is not immune to the same logic. The Lee administration will receive its own version of that bill — not immediately, but on a delay, and through economic and financial instruments rather than military repositioning. When it arrives, it will land on Seoul’s self-employed sector first, because that is where the economy’s pain is already concentrated.
The PPP’s Seoul mayoral candidate needs to make this connection explicit. The reason exchange rates are where they are, the reason fuel costs are what they are, the reason the currency swap is not in place — these are policy choices made in the Blue House. A vote for the Democratic Party’s Seoul candidate is a vote for the continuation of the foreign policy framework producing those choices. A vote for the PPP candidate is a vote for the political pressure needed to change them.
What Conservative Seoul Needs to Say
The People Power Party’s path to the Seoul mayor’s office runs directly through the city’s self-employed community. These are not ideological voters. They are economic voters. They will support the candidate who demonstrates, with specificity and without condescension, that he understands why their businesses are under pressure and what he intends to do about it at the city level.
That means articulating a positive vision — municipal support programs, foot traffic initiatives, small business debt relief advocacy — while connecting the structural causes of the crisis to the national policy decisions that are driving them. It means saying clearly that the restoration of the Korea-U.S. alliance, the renewal of the currency swap, and the normalization of energy procurement agreements are not foreign policy abstractions. They are the upstream determinants of whether a twenty-five-year wholesale merchant in a Seoul traditional market can keep the lights on next month.
Seoul cannot be governed by a candidate who tells its struggling vendors to try consulting. Seoul cannot be governed by a candidate whose policy priorities are ideological experiments while the city’s working economy is in structural distress.
Liberal democracy, the rule of law, the U.S.-Korea alliance, and a city government that understands the economy it is supposed to serve — these are not campaign slogans. They are the prerequisites for a Seoul that works.
Regime change is not optional. It is the only path back.
