A JTBC YouTube political-commentary program has apologized after a panelist joked about political rivals being executed, in a segment that touched one of Korea’s most painful judicial-abuse episodes without the hosts appearing to register the connection. On the program, Genre Only Yeouido, political commentator Kim Jun-il floated Democratic Reform Party as a possible new name for the Rebuilding Korea Party. When the resulting abbreviation, Minhyeokdang, came up, he laughed and remarked that everyone in it would probably end up executed.
The remark landed badly because of a specific, dark chapter in Korea’s modern history. The Reconstruction Committee of the People’s Revolutionary Party incident saw eight people executed in April 1975 under the Park Chung-hee government, following torture and fabricated evidence that produced death sentences in what is widely regarded as one of Korea’s most notorious cases of judicial murder. A near-identical abbreviation, invoked with laughter over people being executed, landed as a callous joke about a historical tragedy involving real people who were unjustly killed, less a slip of the tongue than a sign of how little weight a widely watched political program placed on that history before airing it.
JTBC’s Genre Only Yeouido issued an apology through its YouTube channel, acknowledging an inappropriate remark had been made while discussing the Rebuilding Korea Party’s possible name change, calling it their own carelessness, and removing the segment from the video. Kim Jun-il also apologized on social media, saying he lacked personal restraint and offering a sincere apology to the bereaved families who were hurt.
What deserves scrutiny here goes beyond one commentator’s poor judgment. A mainstream broadcaster’s political program let a joke about a real judicial-murder case reach the public unfiltered, which points to a producing and editorial environment where verifying content in advance simply is not functioning as it should. When a network that positions itself as balanced and credible cannot catch even a callous joke about a case involving real deaths before broadcast, at minimum its verification and editorial oversight in this kind of live-format program needs a hard, honest look. However belated, an apology is the right first step, but it can be no more than that — a first step, not the resolution the episode demands.

장르만여의도, 왜 이 농담이 문제였나
이 발언이 파문을 일으킨 이유는 한국 현대사의 구체적이고 어두운 한 장면 때문이다. 인혁당 재건위 사건은 1974년 박정희 정권 시기 혹독한 고문과 조작된 증거로 사형 판결이 내려져 1975년 4월 8명이 처형된, 대표적인 사법살인 사건으로 꼽힌다. 거의 동일한 약칭을 두고 사람이 사형당한다는 이야기를 웃으며 던진 것은, 억울하게 목숨을 잃은 실존 인물들이 얽힌 역사적 비극을 가볍게 다룬 처사로 받아들여졌다. 말실수라기보다는 방송을 내보내기 전까지 이 역사에 얼마나 무게를 두지 않았는지를 보여주는 장면에 가깝다.
방송사와 패널, 뒤늦은 사과
JTBC 장르만여의도 측은 유튜브 계정을 통해 조국혁신당 당명을 얘기하던 중 부적절한 발언이 있었다며 자신들의 불찰이라고 인정하고 해당 부분을 영상에서 삭제했다. 김준일씨도 자신의 SNS에 인격적으로 수양이 덜 되어서 벌어진 일이라며 상처를 입으신 유가족께 진심으로 사과한다고 밝혔다.
사과로 끝낼 수 없는 검증 부재 문제
여기서 짚어야 할 것은 한 패널의 판단 착오만이 아니다. 주류 방송사 정치 프로그램이 실제 사법살인 사건을 소재로 한 농담을 걸러내지 못한 채 그대로 대중에게 노출시켰다는 것은, 사전 검증이 정상적으로 작동하지 않는 제작·편집 환경을 드러낸다. 균형과 신뢰를 자처하는 언론사가 실제 죽음이 얽힌 사안에 대한 몰지각한 농담조차 걸러내지 못했다면, 최소한 이런 방식의 생방송형 프로그램에 대한 검증과 편집 관리 체계는 냉정하게 다시 점검해야 한다. 늦었더라도 사과는 옳은 첫걸음이지만, 그것만으로 끝내서는 안 될 문제다.
